Sygeplejenissen / Nurse Nisse

English below.

Nurse Nisse is very proud of her badge and her red clogs, and her dream is to become a nurse at the oncological ward at the big hospital in Aalborg.

But Nisse Mom says that only the smartest and nicest of nurses work there, and Nisse Dad says that it is true – and he knows, because he is the nisse who spent most time in hospitals.

So Nurse Nisse keeps practicing every day, and she can tiptoe around so quietly that nobody hears her, pull off bandaids so quickly that nobody feels it, mix sugar in the medicine so nobody tastes it, and comfort so softly, that nobody has enough tears…

Sygeplejenissen what lovely red clogs you have! Your kind of nursing sounds the very best kind! We have a Dr. Henry here who takes care of all the little nissen ❤️

My husband spent a lot of time in the oncology ward – and I was in awe of the nurses. The patients in this ward are all in critical conditions, and for a nurse to go to work every day, dealing with so much pain and grief, and still have so high professional and ethical standards is incredible.
Actually, this was the first nisse I ever made. I needed something to keep my hands busy, but something small and easy to drop instantly, if needed, and luckily, I had yarn and knitting needles in my bag – because of my sweet sister-in-law Peggy, who had told me to go buy yarn and needles. Knit whatever, she said, it doesn’t have to result in anything particular – but keeping your hands busy and the repetitive movements when knitting will ease your body and mind. And so I started her little pointed hat with the white cross. And it all took off from there. My husband loved watching each nisse come to life, and to discuss their clothes and accessories, etc. He was a keen photographer, and hoped to take pictures of them all for a little book.
